Making an Offer & Negotiating

At The Parts Shop, buying classic automotive components is a community effort. Whether you're chasing down a rare hard-to-find trim piece or buying a bundle of spare garage bits, our Make an Offer system gives you a direct, transparent way to negotiate fair prices with sellers.

🤝 How the Make an Offer System Works

  1. Submit Your Offer: On any listing with the Make an Offer option enabled, enter your proposed price. This offer represents the item price alone (shipping and the standard Buyer Protection Fee will be calculated at checkout if accepted).
  2. Seller Review Window: The seller has 48 hours to respond to your offer. During this time, they can:
    • Accept: The item is reserved for you, and you'll be prompted to complete checkout.
    • Decline: The offer is closed, though you can submit a revised offer if you wish.
    • Counteroffer: The seller responds with a different price.
  3. Accepting Counteroffers: If the seller counters, you'll have 24 hours to accept, decline, or send a final counter.

🔒 Commitment & Payment Hold

To keep the marketplace reliable and eliminate non-paying bidders, submitting an offer requires a quick checkout authorization:

  • Pre-Authorization: When you place an offer, your card will be pre-authorized for the offer amount. No money is taken unless the seller accepts.
  • Instant Payment Protection: The moment a seller accepts your offer, the payment is processed directly under Buyer Protection, reserving the part for you instantly.
  • Expired or Declined Offers: If your offer expires or is declined, any temporary pre-authorization hold on your payment method is released automatically.

💡 Best Practices for Negotiating

  • Check Market Value & Condition: Classic parts vary heavily in condition. Factor in missing hardware, surface patina, or refurbishment needs when offering.
  • Bundle Multiple Items: Looking at several parts from the same seller? Drop them a message in Direct Chat to discuss a custom package price before placing an offer.
  • Keep Communication On-Platform: Always use built-in chat and offer buttons. Completing transactions off-platform voids your Buyer Protection guarantees.
